Guyana at 52

first_imgToday thousands of citizens and well-wishers in the region and diaspora will join the country’s leaders to celebrate and mark Guyana’s 52nd Independence Anniversary. The celebrations will no doubt be grand in certain parts of the country, despite the fact that the Government has abandoned the traditional and midnight flag raising ceremony which was the feature event for decades, since it was symbolic with the events which took place back in 1966.Even as Guyanese celebrate, there is need for urgent introspection and reflection on the gains that have made on the country’s long road to independence, and the consistent strides that have been secured in Guyana’s turbulent and dynamic post-Independence history.Recall, that upon attainment of Independence, Guyana became the only English-speaking country on the South American continent and the 24th member of the then British Commonwealth of Nations, despite the struggles faced in the early 1950s and its nationalist movement which birthed the original People’s Progressive Party under the leadership of the Late Presidents Dr Cheddi B. Jagan and Forbes Burnham. At that time, both leaders pursued a menu of noble, democratic and visionary policies aimed at the attainment of national unity and internal self-government. As Dr Tota Mangar wrote in one of his literary pieces, “their resounding victory at the 1953 general elections under adult suffrage astounded many, including local reactionaries, the Colonial Office, and moreso the US State Department”. It was the crowning achievement of how a people could rally against oppression if they were hungry for the right to determine their own destinies.Dr Mangar also notes in his writings that “the mass-based party’s tenure in office was only short-lived, as Great Britain, under considerable American pressure, suspended the Constitution and overthrew the legally elected Government under the guise of preventing the establishment of a communist state in the then British Guiana. An interim Government was imposed, and it comprised of many individuals, who themselves suffered humiliating defeat at the hands of the toppled nationalist candidates. As if that setback was not enough, the nationalist movement itself became severely fractured in 1955 into Jaganite and Burnhamite factions of the PPP and the eventual emergence of the People’s National Congress two years later. This development paved the way for the subsequent intense political rivalry between our two foremost leaders – Dr Jagan and Mr Burnham. It was no doubt at this point that Guyana’s history became even more interesting and intriguing in the lead up to Independence, because the split between the two leaders led to many of the problems which characterized Independent Guyana in her post-Independence years, which were also considered as the “dark years”.As history would have it, Burnham would lead the first coalition Government in 1964 with the United Force, while Dr Jagan continued his activism and work in Opposition, notwithstanding the fact that he led the first national Government. The ultimate movement of triumph of patriotism, unity and togetherness came when, in the presence of the Duke and Duchess of Kent; Sir Richard Luyt, the first Governor-General of Guyana; former Conservative Colonial Secretary Duncan Sandys, and Colonial Secretary Anthony Greenwood, and 62 delegates from 47 countries worldwide, Dr Jagan and Burnham embraced each other in what appeared to be an emotionally charged hug.Fifty-two years after the event, Guyana is still facing some of the same challenges faced then. This country is toying and experimenting with various models of governance that could lead to inclusivity and the achievement of national unity. The country is still racially polarized and divided despite the advancement of legislation and other events that took place, which were aimed at creating national healing, consensus-building, and inclusivity.Leaders are still locked in a heated debate about the kind of Guyana that is needed in order to transform the lives of the ordinary men and their standard of living. The same threats that existed in the pre- and post-colonial days appear to be resurfacing disguised as new wine, but many of those who lived through the fifties recognize the old bottles and know too well the dangers that may lie ahead if a decision is not paid to change course. We must work together to accomplish a lot more by the time the country celebrates its next Independence Anniversary. Citizens must take pride in being Guyanese, and must understand that they are the only ones that could truly redefine this country’s destiny, but they must not barter their rights and freedoms in order to live a good life. They must defend those freedoms zealously, while demanding that those in power who have access to the public purse fulfill their mandate as promised.last_img read more

Heroes’ toast

first_imgVALENCIA – Veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan are benefitting from a unique tribute by a local wine distributor. “Six Heroes” Memorial Merlot, the label bearing the embossed image of the raising of the American flag on Iwo Jima, is a limited-edition vintage wine presented in an unusual way. The Six Heroes name refers to the six men – five Marines and one Navy corpsman – whose flag-raising became a unifying symbol of World War II. “Each case, which contains two bottles of wine, opens to show one of the bottles fitted with a brushed aluminum capsule that gives it the look of an artillery shell, which symbolizes the atrocity of war,” said George Bacon, proprietor of Friar’s Choice North America LLC, which distributes the wine. Bacon’s move, while unique, is not the first time a specific wine has been used to raise funds for charity. “We have a wine called Big Tattoo Red that is produced by Two Brothers Winery,” said Frankie Cerna of Wine 661 in Valencia. “The brothers’ mother died of breast cancer and they donate 50 cents from each bottle to cancer research.” According to their Web site, sales of Big Tattoo wine have raised $770,000 as of July 1. “I wanted to do something both humanitarian and patriotic,” Bacon said. “I wanted to create something that would appeal to those who appreciate wine and serve a worthwhile purpose and maybe grab their hearts.” “Generally the American public has no idea of the huge financial impact on a disabled veteran returning home,” he added. Bacon’s generosity was enthusiastically received by the coalition and he was encouraged to expand his product line to include golf shirts and camouflage caps. The coalition reciprocated by adding a link to his Web site and arranging for discount sales through military.com. While the wine has only been available for a couple of months, orders have been pouring in and Bacon has already written a check to the coalition. Bacon, who spent the past 25 years working in corporate-risk management, is enjoying this branch of his professional life. He hopes to eventually turn Six Heroes into a nonprofit, similar to Newman’s Own, the food company owned by actor Paul Newman, which generates millions of dollars for the Hole in the Wall camp and other charities. In an attempt to spread the word about his tribute vintage, Bacon sent a few bottles around to friends and politicians, including U.S. Rep. Howard P. “Buck” McKeon. “It wasn’t until after I sent it that I realized he doesn’t drink,” Bacon said with a sheepish smile. “Six Heroes doesn’t make any political statement for or against any current events,” he said. “It only acknowledges the atrocities of all wars, going back to the beginning of time.” He hopes to release the second wine in the heroes series, a chardonnay, sometime in 2007. Mr. Bacon sent a bottle from the first batch and we sampled it here in the office. Everyone was very pleased.” Clifford said his group was initially founded to pay homage specifically to those who were fighting in Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom, but when they had their first rally, discovered there was a much greater need for help than just tribute. “We changed our focus to bringing together resources to help the severely injured service members,” he said. The coalition provides emergency financial help, housing assistance, family support and career counseling. last_img read more

Sanral starts Eastern Cape N2 upgrade

first_img17 July 2015The South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) has started work on its R900-million Southern Region construction project. The national road network is the economic link between Port Elizabeth and East London, and is the west-east link between Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal.In the first phase, it has begun upgrading a 47km stretch of the N2 highway between Grahamstown and the Fish River pass, in Eastern Cape. The project comprises upgrading a single carriageway through the mountainous region, and construction is in three phases. It is not without its challenges, among which are saving the protected Oldenburgia grandis trees indigenous to some places along the route, limiting delays to road users during construction and keeping the impact on adjoining property owners to a minimum.A large amount of rock has to be blasted, and the design also has to tie into the existing Fish River Bridge.Rock blasting is planned for today, 15km outside Grahamstown towards Peddie, according to Sanral. The upgrade of 16.7km of the N2 included geometric improvements, realignment, widening of existing cuttings and fill embankments, the roads agency said.Grahamstown to KingIn total, the project is expected to take six to seven years. It is part of a long-term strategy to improve roads around and between Grahamstown and King William’s Town and comprises geometric improvements to portions of the national highway.Climbing lanes to improve the level of surface will also be added.“The existing road was built in the 1960s and currently does not meet Sanral’s desired alignment and safety standards,” said the agency. An increase in traffic volumes, particularly heavy vehicles, had prompted the need for the upgrade.Improved sight distance for drivers was expected to cut road accidents and reduce vehicle operating costs, while travel times were expected to be shorter. In media reports, Sanral has that the project will improve and prepare the N2 to support increasing volumes of motorists on the national road over the next 25 years, while enabling lower fuel consumption on the upgraded road, which will also reduce carbon emissions.Regarding the rare Oldenburgia grandis, which only grows on quartzite outcrops, Sanral collaborated with Rhodes University, in Grahamstown, and funded a study and transplant programme for these plants. The project is being overseen by a postgraduate botany student.N2 Wild Coast toll roadIn other road news, the construction of the N2 Wild Coast toll road was expected to start in September 2016, said Gugile Nkwinti, the rural development and land reform minister. He was speaking in his capacity as the chairman of the Presidential Infrastructure Co-ordinating Committee (PICC) on 9 July at a public consultation meeting in Bizana, Eastern Cape. The PICC oversees bulk infrastructure projects and manages 18 strategic infrastructure projects (SIPs). Nkwinti is responsible for SIP3, which targets the South-East Node and Corridor Development. This includes the N2 Wild Coast Highway, new dam at Mzimvubu with an irrigation system. He received a Sanral report on the status of the project earlier last week. “We have made a decision. What we want to know now is where we are going to relocate people who have to make way for the road. In case of graves, we want people to indicate where the graves will be relocated. We are left with 13 months before construction starts.”The department said that if court processes against the construction of the toll road persisted, the project would start in 2017.“Before construction resumes, houses, graves, animal veld, and mealie-fields will be relocated to suitable alternative land. A survey commissioned by Sanral about the proposed new route for the N2 along the Wild Coast indicated an almost unanimous level of support for this development.”SAinfo reporterlast_img read more

Google Gives Everyone $10 to Try New Google Wallet…but There’s a Catch

first_imgTop Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… sarah perez Related Posts Hey! Free Money!According to the Google Wallet website, the Google Prepaid Card is a virtual credit card which you can fund with any of your existing credit card accounts. The funding source doesn’t have to be Citi, nor does it have to be a MasterCard. Instead, you’ll simply activate the preloaded prepaid card within the Wallet application to begin to use it. Because the Google Prepaid Card is virtual, you won’t receive a plastic card in the mail, explains Google. And here’s the best part: Google will give you $10 for free just for activating its PrePaid Card. That means free money to spend at Google’s partners’ shops, a list that includes Peet’s Coffee, Subway, Walgreens, Toys R Us, American Eagle Outfitters, Foot Locker, Bloomingdale’s, The Container Store, Einstein Bros. Bagels, Jamba Juice, Guess, Macy’s, Walgreens and more. Plus, Google Wallet works at any MasterCard Paypass-enabled merchant, like CVS, Sports Authority, Jack in the Box, Sunoco and The Coca Cola Company (select vending machines). Is There a Catch? Depends on How Creepy You Think Google is…In all seriousness, if you’re wondering why Google is pushing Google Wallet so hard that it’s willing to hand out free cash, you have to understand Google’s core business. No, not search, silly! Advertising. With a mobile payments system like Google Wallet, the company can track transactions all the way through from the first time a user clicks on an ad in Google’s search results to the time of checkout at the point-of-sale. It will also open up whole new forms of advertising, like geo-targeted ads based on your current location, offers that appear when you search for a local business through Google’s Yelp-like Google Places service, offers that appear when you search just for a business category (e.g., “lunch,” “drug store”), Groupon-like group-buying deals, offers that appear on store loyalty cards loaded into the Wallet service, offers available on physical signage, in-store displays, posters, NFC-enabled tags and more.Google wants to tie all parts of the buying process together starting with the initial research (for larger purchases, perhaps) or the on-the-go queries performed on your mobile phone all the way to the end result – the merchant that gets your money. And it wants to keep track of your shopping habits and trends, so it can serve you even better ads. More targeted, highly personalized ads that are more likely to appeal to you, and you alone. How very Minority Report. In a way, this is type of narrowed down targeting isn’t all that different from what Facebook provides advertisers today – a way to direct a message to carefully selected and filtered members of the online population. For example, a Facebook advertiser could direct ads to all unmarried women aged 25-35 who live within 20 miles of New York. Google, on the other hand, will know you not only through your Google profile and use of its numerous other services, it will also know you in a way that may have even more appeal to some advertisers: where you spend, how much, how often, where you are now and what you’re trying to find. Sounds like a winning formula, and maybe a little creepy. But that’s Google for you. As Chairman Eric Schmidt once said while CEO, “Google policy is to get right to the creepy line and not cross it.”Did it succeed? Tags:#web Google’s NFC-enabled mobile wallet was announced this morning in partnership with mobile operator Sprint, issuing bank Citi and payment network MasterCard. But did you know that you don’t have to be a Citi card holder to try the service? As it turns out, Google is also offering a free “virtual” card which you can load up with funds from any account. And to get you enthused about testing this new mobile payments technology, Google is giving everyone $10 for free to get started. 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Marketlast_img read more

first_imgAustralia have won the toss and elected to field first against IndiaWelcome to the coverage of the ODI Tri-series, Game 5 between India and Australia from the Sydney Cricket Ground in Melbourne.ScorecardIt’s Official: So the inevitable has happened. The match has been called off. From yesterday rain was predicted for Sydney today and the forecast promptly came true. The match was delayed by 40 minutes. We got some play in before a rain delay for 50 minutes. The rain relented and the players came back to play. 16 overs were possible before a big storm struck and forced the abandonment.Inevitable. Called off! Rahane and Kohli were there in the middle when the rain came down. India will be happy with the two points as it now gives them a realistic chance of making the final. Stay tuned for more updates. If India lose today or the match gets washed out, their ODI against England on Friday, becomes a knock-out game. India will have to secure a bonus point win in case they lose today. Stat-Attack:Sachin Tendulkar scored a masterly 117 in 2008 to mastermind India’s only victory over Australia in a One-Day International in Sydney.advertisementIt’s very very special day for both the teams. While India celebrate their 66th Republic day, the hosts will be celebrating the Australia day, their official national day. A win in today’s game will be of momentous significance for both the teams. Australia are already through to the final and will be looking forward to keep the momentum going. On the other hand, winless India find themselves in a do-or-die situation. The hosts are in terrific touch. Their bowling attack is solid, with Mitchell Starc enjoying a dream run. He was ruthless in their first two games, and combined well with other bowlers in their last match to put up an admirable display of death bowling. Although their batting lacks the same consistency as their bowling, their depth has allowed them to play more freely. George Bailey, who missed the last game due to suspension, will take over the captaincy from Steve Smith. Shaun Marsh will make way for David Warner. Mitchell Johnson is fit but it remains to be seen whether Australia would rush him for a seemingly inconsequential game. The fact that Australia are already through offers them a good chance to experiment. For India, it has been a sorry tale. Opting to bat first in both their games, the visitors stuttered in the initial overs. They were able to post a decent 267 against Australia in the first, but it was no match for a flamboyant Australian batting attack. Against England, it was yet another story. Collective failure from the batsmen meant that India could only post a meagre 153 on board. There continues to be a big question mark over Shikhar Dhawan’s form and Virat Kohli’s batting position still seems uncertain. Even Rohit Sharma continues to remain out of the side due to a hamstring injury. The bowlers have been wayward and miserably inconsistent. India have failed as a unit in both their matches. However, Ishant Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja’s return to the side might give the visitors a glimmer of hope.India:The defending World Champions had a sorry day at the office against England. They were blown away by Steven Finn and James Anderson and there appear to be cracks creeping up into the famed batting line-up. There are question marks surrounding Shikhar Dhawan’s place in the side and Virat Kohli’s batting position. India’s two aggressive batsman at the top of the order have failed to get started. Rohit Sharma, India’s centurion against Australia in Melbourne, has been sidelined by a hamstring injury and will miss the encounter in Sydney.India, however, will be boosted by Ishant Sharma’s and Ravindra Jadeja’s steady return to fitness. Stuart Binny, who shone in an otherwise forgettable day against England, may keep his place even if India opt to for a two-spinner attack. Jadeja’s bowling readiness may help the team management make the choice among the three available spinners. A five day break after their twin defeats may augur well for a team that looks to regain its mental freshness.Australia:Australia have enjoyed the perfect tune-up thus far. Their first two victories were set up by Mitchell Starc and their bursts with the new ball. Then, in their last game against England, Starc and James Faulkner came up with a fine exhibition of death bowling to restrict England to 303, when they looked set to get much more. The batting has remained solid, if not flamboyant. The depth in batting has allowed the top-order to bat with freedom. For the India game, there are welcome returns to the squad. George Bailey will take over as captain missing the last game due to suspension. Mitchell Marsh has sufficiently recovered from an injury sustained during the Brisbane Test against India. David Warner and Shane Watson missed the Hobart ODI with hamstring injuries and It remains to be seen, if the think-tank would rush them for an inconsequential game. Mitchell Johnson, though fit, will make a return only for the final. However, Josh Hazlewood and Xavier Doherty are expected to play on Monday.Teams(from):India: Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane, Suresh Raina, MS Dhoni(c/wk), Stuart Binny, Akshar Patel, Ravichandran Ashwin, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Umesh Yadav, Ambati Rayudu, Mohammed Shami, Ishant Sharma, Mohit Sharma, Dhawal Kulkarni, Ravindra JadejaAustralia: Aaron Finch, David Warner, Shane Watson, Steven Smith, George Bailey(c), Glenn Maxwell, Brad Haddin(wk), James Faulkner, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Xavier Doherty, Mitchell Marsh, Mitchell Johnson, Josh Hazlewood, Kane Richardson, Gurinder Sandhulast_img read more
