Tuesday’s league match at Liverpool and the Chelsea manager said: "To win away at Liverpool is never easy and we lost the game against them here "It will be a really tough game but after that it will be 15 games to the finish line and you want to continue going this way to keep them in the distance" he added of a Liverpool side who are currently 10 points behind Chelsea and will go into Tuesday’s Championship team who had no answer to the pace and movement of the hosts ‘Idea of football’ "The FA Cup is a good opportunity to see the improvement of these young players" said Conte "I am satisfied News Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s foreign relations innings began with a bang with the invitation to heads of the SAARC countries for his swearing-in The resounding success of that initiative can be gauged from the fact that all but one head of state/ government turned up for the event making it an international relations coup of sorts Through this deft move PM Modi proved that he understands the external affairs department well enough He is not all that new to other countries and their leaders As chief minister and even earlier as a party leader he had visited several countries including China Japan and the US His home state became a destination for countless world leaders during his stewardship and he regularly rubbed shoulders with the high and mighty from more than a hundred countries during the Vibrant Gujarat summit and other events His cabinet colleague and minister for external affairs Sushma Swaraj too is no novice to the subject As leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha she had had the opportunity to interact with a number of senior world leaders including US President Barack Obama Her recent visits to Singapore and Sri Lanka as the leader of the BJP showed her grip on foreign affairs Leaders of those countries fondly remember their association with her even to this day Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s participation in the swearing-in has raised big hopes in the diplomatic circles in both countries India and Pakistan have had chequered relations from day one Moreover the BJP is seen as a hardline party when it comes to relations with Pakistan Given that scenario it is natural that a lot of discussion took place on whether Modi and Sharif would kickstart a new era in vexed bilateral ties This feverish enthusiasm is understandable Many Indians have for several decades been obsessed with Pakistan For them the benchmark of success of our international relations is our relationship with Pakistan They fail to appreciate that India is miles ahead of its failed western neighbour They also fail to realise that Sharif is not the right man to deliver anything As Ayaz Amir pointed out in his latest article in The News while Manmohan Singh took 10 years to fail Sharif may need just two years to collapse Already the all-powerful Pakistan army and the mercenaries of the ISI are baying for his blood As Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai pointed out the attack on the Indian consulate in Herat by ISI cronies on the very day of Modi’s swearing-in was more a warning to Sharif than to India However the Modi government should realise that the real foreign policy challenge comes not from Pakistan but from China India and China have been uneasy neighbours for longer years than India and Pakistan Unlike Pakistan China is a big and successful country On the eve of the visit of China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi the Indian government should revisit its China policy The Indian leadership should understand one basic truth It hardly matters in China’s context as to how many times our leaders have visited China or vice versa The notion that diplomacy is all about proximity doesn’t hold any water in China’s context Nehru to Nixon had good experience of it What plagues our foreign policy with regard to China is the utter lack of knowledge about the Himalayan neighbour in our country With Pakistan our obsession is security whereas with China we are overawed by the talk of development there Ordinary individuals and ministers alike look at China only through the prism of its development and fail to appreciate the complex civilisational traits of that country All neighbours are not alike China is certainly not like any other neighbour China is not just a country or a government; it is a civilisation To understand China our leader should better understand their civilisational behaviour We should know Sun Tzu’s Art of War; we should study Confucius China’s policy behaviour is largely shaped by its civilisational experience Diplomacy for them is an art of deception In 1954 India and China proclaimed Panchsheel as the basis of our relations Successive Indian leaders including AB Vajpayee never missed the opportunity to refer to Panchsheel and “peaceful coexistence” as enshrined in it in bilateral talks No wonder if the present leadership is also forced to continue the ritual by MEA mandarins But we forget that the obituary of Panchsheel was written by Mao in 1962 itself when he told Zhou Enlai that India and China should practise not “peaceful coexistence” but “armed coexistence” Another important aspect of China to be borne in mind is that as in Pakistan the military plays an important role in China too The Central Military Commission the all-powerful body that controls the Chinese military reports to the Communist Party of China more than to the government of China While we deal with the government leadership on various bilateral issues we can’t overlook the fact that the view of the military on various cross-border issues is also significant The Indian government enjoys one advantage in India-China relations that of the ignorance of the masses in India about the complexities involved in it In the case of Pakistan the people of India are very aware of the sensitivities forcing government’s options to a limited few However in the case of China no such constraint in the form of popular backlash is going to happen The very fact that while there were animated debates over whether Nawaz Sharif should have been invited to the swearing-in ceremony there is no such commotion with regard to the phone call or proposed visit of the premier of China within the next few months proves this point But the government must understand that this popular approval born of a lack of knowledge can be dangerous if it decides to take things easy with China Madhav is a member of the Central Executive RSS and the author of ‘Uneasy Neighbours: India and China after reported Contactmusic In the movie Wolverine – also known as the titular Logan – meets a noble end when defending X-23 and her fellow young mutants from the Reavers and Jackman says he originally believed it would have been more powerful if he didn’t die Logan happens to be the 10th film in the X-Men series — making it the seventh-highest-grossing film franchise of all time Hugh Jackman has played Wolverine in nine of those films including Logan Neither of that is a reason to skip this one On the contrary there are lessons here in how to wrap up a film journey as Jackman has announced Logan is — the end of his time in the X-men universe The fantastic Australian actor presents Wolverine here as a rasping breathless tired version of himself dying physically as well as mentally as mutants such as him are forced into desert hideouts by a world that is targeting them When the film wants us to have a glimpse of the Wolverine of the past it finds a clever way to do that too “It was always floated that Logan would possibly die I said ‘Let’s be open because it may be more powerful for him not to die … James was always certain of that ending and he was right “Unlike a human character what’s most poignant for someone who is thought to be indestructible is him dying while saying ‘This is what it feels like’” For all the latest Entertainment News download Indian Express App Uttar Pradesh assembly elections expected in early 2017 The announcement came during his back-to-back visits to Meerut and Agra on 6 and 7 July where he attended two iftaar parties during the current month of Ramzan Owaisi had first visited Lucknow during Ramzan last year and since then his requests to hold public meetings in cities in the state havebeen repeatedly rejected by the state administration on one pretext or the other PTI imageHe attended an iftaar party in Meerut on 6July and the second in Agra on 7July Both cities have a significant Muslim presence and on both occasions a big crowd comprising mostly of youth turned up to see and listen to him In Meerut the venue was Shahi Mahal a private building on Hapur road A big crowd mobbed Owaisi as he arrived at the venue creating a commotion but the police did little to restore order or to take Owaisi into a protective ring The commotion angered Owaisi who had to repeatedly shout at workers to be quiet and orderly In Agra the iftaar was held in the Dargaah Amir Abul Ula and Owaisi later moved to a restaurant on MG Road to address the media The change in programme was obviously a result of the unsavoury scenes in Meerut The gathering at the restaurant was comparatively smaller but the enthusiasm was no less In his address to his followers in Agra Owaisi targeted the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) saying it wanted to convert India into a Hindu state "While on one hand the RSS talks about organizing iftaar parties and on the other it reaffirms its commitment about making India a Hindu state This won’t do” he said Singling out Modi he said the Central government promised to release Rs 100 crore for modernisation of madrasas and the reportthat Maharashtra chief minister said he did not consider those studying at madrasas to be genuine students “It appears that the Maharashtra CM is working against his own PM” he commented He targeted the Samajwadi Party government in Uttar Pradesh for refusing permission for his public meetings “Eleven meetings of my party had been cancelled because of lack of permission but we are committed to contest the 2017 Assembly elelction in UP” he said A day earlier in Meerut he announced that he would enter UP politics from Meerut “We will certainly contest the Assembly polls in 2017 although I cannot say how many seats we will contest” Owaisi told the gathering The SP government headed by Akhilesh Yadav remained his target as he said it has failed to fulfil any of its promises to the Muslims "There is no law and order in this state The SP and BJP are hand in glove behind the frequent communal clashes in the state We will restore rule of law in the state and ensure development in the state" Owaisi said He reserved abarb forMohammad Azam Khan saying that the senior UP minister had forgotten how under his government women were targeted and molested in Muzaffarnagar butno action had been taken in the case so far "He should first do something to improve law and order situation" he commented The UP convener of the AIMIM Shaukat Ali said that on both days Owaisi also met party workers sympathizers and followers from many western districts of the state The party had been denied permission to hold rallies in Allahabad Agra Meerut and Azamgarh Every time permission was initially granted but later withdrawn on the apprehension of breach of peace and disturbing communal harmony It was in July 2014that Owaisi had visited Lucknow during the month of Ramzan and met several community leaders He had also instructed party activists to strengthen the party’s membership drive across the state Besides the western districts the AIMIM is likely to focus on Azamgarh Gorakhpur Fatehpur Unnao and Varanasi Owaisi’s forays into UP have caused considerable unease among the top leaders of the Samajwadi Party although on the face of it the party dismisses him as of being little consequence However the big turnout at Owaisi’s meetings and the enthusiasm among the youth are considered a sign of the growing desire among at least one section of Muslims to look for an option beyond the SP The Bharatiya Janata Party on the other hand is quite elated at the possibility of a division in the Muslim community’s political commitment “It is a sign of the weakening hold of the Samajwadi Party over the minority community” a party leader said on condition of anonymity Owaisi is seen as a polarising figure and in the event of his growing presence in UP a communal and resultant electoral polarization is considered a distinct possibility By:
