Authorities encourage residents to report on one another

first_img News Authorities encourage residents to report on one another There are signs that North Korea is running into serious difficulties with its corn harvest SHARE Sources are indicating that the North Korean authorities are using inminban or neighborhood watch meetings to encourage residents to report on each other for legal infractions. Officials from North Korea’s judicial agencies have attended the meetings and reminded residents of the phone numbers to call when reporting suspicious activities to the Ministry of State Security (dial 110), and the Ministry of People’s Security (dial 118). The repeated mention of these numbers has come with strong encouragement for residents to report on each other. “Residents are being instructed to report if they see anyone taking pictures of specific buildings or of homeless children,” a source in Ryanggang Province told Daily NK on May 3. “The authorities have long relied on residents to report on each other, but things are a bit different this time around because the authorities have given the residents phone numbers for law enforcement entities and are urging residents to quickly provide reports.” The developments suggest that the regime is responding to the influx of outside information into North Korea and the leaking of domestic information abroad. The source added that a new slogan is being used by the authorities to enable them to “uproot the breeding grounds for anti-socialist and counter-revolutionary activities in Ryanggang Province,” and that residents are being advised to avoid meeting with suspicious people to avoid becoming the target of an inquiry.“Party cadres are actually more commonly involved in illegal activities and drugs than normal residents, so these developments are making them nervous. Residents choose to tread carefully whenever the authorities ratchet up the pressure. They’re encouraging each other to be careful,” the source explained.Residents, however, are generally unwilling to report on each other because there is no reward for doing so. In addition, anyone who lodges a report must be on call until the situation is resolved. A separate source in Ryanggang Province explained that often the person submitting the report also falls under suspicion, so residents do not proactively seek to report incidents. “The safest practice is to pretend that you have not seen or heard anything unusual,” he said.“But as residents are also told that there will be punishments for those who do not report suspicious activity, there will be some who actually do call in to file a report.”  Facebook Twitter NewsEconomy News center_img By Kang Mi Jin – 2017.05.08 3:12pm Kang Mi JinKang Mi JinKang Mi Jin is a North Korean defector turned journalist who fled North Korea in 2009. Arnaldo Brown, says the Government is prepared to assist, in whatever way possible, in facilitating local investors interested in exploring and tapping into business opportunities anticipated to materialize in Cuba, consequent on the United States’ re-establishment of diplomatic relations with that country.Mr. Brown notes that while the United States’ economic embargo imposed on Cuba over 50 years ago remains in place, the diplomatic re-engagement announced by US President, Barrack Obama, is expected to facilitate “some economic activity” and “ease of movement’ between the countries, among other things.“After 50 years of embargo, there is still a lot of development that will have to take place to bring Cuba forward (in line with significant advances made by other countries). What they do have in their favour is the fact that they have a highly educated population and, therefore,…closing of the gap won’t be that challenging for them. But it is still going to require significant investment of capital. So it, therefore, means that there are possibilities for investors in Jamaica to invest in Cuba,” the State Minister argues.Speaking at the weekly meeting of the Trafalgar New Heights Rotary Club, at the CRU Bar Complex on Lady Musgrave Road, St. Andrew, on January 15, Mr. Brown said an important aspect of the revived diplomatic relations is the possible dismantling of the embargo, anticipated. While acknowledging that the embargo’s removal is “a matter for the Congress of the United States of America to address”, Mr. Brown said thawing of the relations should generate is a “myriad” of opportunities for large, medium, and small local investors to explore and tap into the potential business opportunities in the Spanish-speaking Caribbean island of 11 million people. RelatedDiaspora Hailed For Contribution to National Development RelatedJamaicans In Canada to Invest in Stock Market Come April 1 Against this background, Mr. Brown said the government “stands ready” to “facilitate” anyone interested in exploring these possibilities. He contended that given the history of the relationship between Jamaica and Cuba, which established diplomatic ties in 1972, “the possibilities are significant.”“I think the issue, really, is how we view what is happening and how we prepare ourselves for what is happening. As far as the Government is concerned, I think that we have prepared the way in terms of the diplomatic relationships that are there, in terms of the connections that are there, and that it is really for private enterprise to become proactive in terms of seeking out the opportunities that exist there,” Mr. Brown contended.A key element of the diplomatic re-engagement between the United States and Cuba is the mutual re-establishment Embassies and resumed appointment Ambassadors, as agreed on by President Obama, and his counterpart, Raul Castro. Lae City smash Hekari

first_imgSOCCER BY SABRINA GALATAU and SIMON KESLEP REIGNING champions Lae City FC survived an even contest against arch rivals Hekari United FC and came out victorious with a 1-0 win in the National Soccer League triple header Round 12 main game at the PNG Football Stadium. Lae City FC captain and midfielder Emmanuel Simon along with the support of Jacob Sabua and also a collective team effort kept mounting pressure on Hekari’s defensive line in opening minutes of play. A break through by Ecuadorian Abdias Aguirre Aguirre provided the opportunity for Sabua to find the net after Hekari’s Vito Laloata failed attempt to clear the ball with goalkeeper Ismael Pole rushing out from the goalmouth. The defensive error by the Hekari United saw a reshuffle of backline positions and also the substitution of Laloata by Langarap Samol. Several goalscoring opportunities swayed in both team’s favor, ball possessions equally shared, goal keepers (Hekari – Ismael Pole and Lae City FC Ronald Warison) kept busy while defenders continued to shut down every attacking set plays. Former Lae City FC attacking duo Raymond Gunemba and Nigel Dabinyaba were kept under close surveillance by the defensive efforts of Lae City defenders Alwin Komolong, Philip Steven, Felix Komolong, Thomas Yagum and Emmanuel Airem. “Definitely, we were not relying on any key player who left the club; we did not dwell in the past. Forget everything. I think I now have the best team, I believe in all the players now on the field. We trained hard for this game (against Hekari). Our defense was really tough, we all played and, most importantly we were composed in our transitional plays. Our defense won this game,” said Lae City Coach Bob Morris. The red army also maintained their defensive plays to keep competition’s top goalscorer Stahl Gubag, Abdias and Obert Bika from scoring. The half-time score remained 1-0 in favor of Lae City. The restart of the second stanza saw Hekari rally in a team effort to put pressure on the reigning champions. Lae City took control and stood firm in their defensive format to deny the onslaught attacking plays by Hekari’s Michael Foster, Gunemba, Dabinyaba and Kolu Kepo. Foster had an opportunity to equalize with a header from a crosskick however Warison was quick enough to tap back the ball as Alwin Komolong made a big clearance kick. Lae City held on until the final whistle. “Firstly I am happy with the team even though we lost. For Lae City, they took their chances and they scored the goal through our mistake but I am very proud of the boys. I know we can build from here onwards. It was a really hard two weeks for us, a lot of pressure, stress and allegations on us and I think it is rested now,” said Hekari United FC team manageress Vonnie Eteaki Natto. In the remaining minutes of the second half, Hekari United keeper Pole was booked with a red card for deliberately denying a Lae City player from scoring. Pole was substituted by Chritianus Biasu. Abdias Aguirre Aguirre, Gubag and Bika of Lae City communicated well resulting in a good number of attempts at the target but most went over the crossbar and a few missed. The other two matches played also on Saturday saw Star Mountain FC causing an upset 3-1 win over FC Bougainville while Vitiaz United FC punished the visiting FC Morobe Wawens 3-0. Games in Lae, Kutubu FC 4 defeated Gulf Komara FC 3, Morobe United FC 2 defeated Tusbab Stallions 1.
