5 keys for Vols vs. Bowling Green

first_imgTennessee defensive end Derek Barnett could rack up sacks against Bowling Green on Saturday.Tennessee defensive end Derek Barnett could rack up sacks against Bowling Green on Saturday.Tennessee, ranked 25th in the country, opens its season Saturday against Bowling Green (3 p.m., SEC Network) at Nashville’s Nissan Stadium. It’s the first meeting between the two schools. Here are five keys for the Vols in the opener.1. Get ahead early: Teams from the Mid-American Conference are often scrappy. In 2012, Bowling Green went to Florida and hung around for three quarters after grabbing an early lead. Last season’s Falcons also had a tendency to score on their first drive. Tennessee needs to score on at least one of its first few drives to get the home-state crowd into the game and strip the Falcons of their upset mentality.2. Pulverize the line: Bowling Green has an experienced offensive line, but so did Iowa in last season’s TaxSlayer Bowl and the Vols easily won that matchup. There should be plenty of sack opportunities for Curt Maggitt and Derek Barnett. Few things are as deflating to an offensive line as negative plays, and Tennessee’s defensive front has potential to force a large number of them.3. Find your five: There remains some uncertainty regarding Tennessee’s offensive line personnel. This is the position group that held this team back a season ago. The Vols need to go into the Oklahoma game with their best possible line intact. The opener should provide a good opportunity to figure out which players fit that mold.4. Don’t lose your man: Bowling Green can score points quickly, and Butch Jones was full of praise for quarterback Matt Johnson. Tennessee’s secondary was banged up this preseason and is down a couple bodies this season. Last season, some receivers had monstrous games against the Vols. The Falcons could have success moving the ball through the air.5. Put Quinten in: If all goes according to plan for the Vols, second-string quarterback Quinten Dormady, a true freshman, will enter the game in the second half. Josh Dobbs is likely to have an injury scare or two throughout the course of the season due to playing style. The more work Tennessee can get Dormady the better in case he is thrust into the starting role.Reach Matt Slovin at [email protected] or on Twitter @MattSlovin.TENNESSEE VS.
